Tech Requirements?

Hey Guys,
I'm having a little trouble with the laptop requirements. Its a little hard to find a laptop that doesn't have Windows Vista. I don't really want the Dell that is recommended. Does anyone know/think If it will really present a big problem? Maybe the USMLE will be more compatible by the time we are ready to take it?

Thanks,
Karimah

Parking Question (Marie Fiero please help!)

Hi everyone,

I looked at the parking info that was recently posted by Marie Fiero, and I have a couple small questions.

1) If we're students who will drive to campus everyday (from orientation right on through graduation), would we want "guaranteed access parking"?
2) It says for students, we can get parking for September through December by paying for it by August 29. BUT what about parking in August, when classes/orientation starts?
3) Does it really matter which garage we get a spot in? Is there any difference? If so, do we get to make a request for which garage? How so?

Thanks so much to anyone who can answer this!! Hope you guys are enjoying your summers, and on a side note McGillins is an awesome bar (see Scotty Lang's post below). We might as well party it up before we hit the books real hard this year. I mean hey, we all want to be the best med school class in the history of Temple, right??

Anyone planning to live in North Philly?

Hey guys. I was just wondering if anyone was planning on living within walking distance of the med school campus. Since I wont have a car I feel like this will be the best option. If anyone is planning on living there or knows anyone who is planning on living there, I would like to get in touch with you. Thanks, and I can't wait to meet you guys.

Hello From Pittsburgh

Hey guys, my name is Justin. Just like the rest of you, I’m really excited for Temple. I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh last year with a degree in neuroscience. Since then, I’ve been working in a research lab studying novel treatments for schizophrenia. Anyway, if anyone else is coming from Pittsburgh and would like to meet up around here some time before we head to philly let me know. Also, I just looked into renting a U-Haul to move my furniture and it’s fairly expensive. If anyone would be interested in splitting the cost/truck with me please let me know! My email is JDarrah01@gmail.com.

I look forward to meeting everyone in august, it seems like we have a really cool class!

Parking

According to the Office of Student Affairs, the parking information for Fall ’07 will be available on June 27th. We will post this to TempleMedOnline as soon as we receive the information. Have a great week!

Hey guys,

I'm Melissa. I graduated from Penn State last May (2006)...go Nittany Lions! I just thought I say hi and whatnot. I have been traveling for awhile and I'm just starting to get everything in order for school. It's been a year since I've been in school and I'm really excited to go back. Can't wait to me all of you. I live in the suburbs of Philly, but I'm going to move to the city (I have 6 younger brothers and sisters...can't live at home). I was just wondering if anyone needed a roommate or wanted to look for a place with me. Since I live near Philly and not everyone else does, I can go take a look at apartments. Let me know. My email is missyrs7@aol.com.

Cheers,
Melissa

Partner in crime?

Howdy!

I am looking for another student to take a bedroom in a 3-bedroom house in South Philly. I'll be bringing my car so carpooling with me to class is an option. There is a semi-finished basement for an office or we can use the third bedroom for this purpose. The rent is negotiable, but I'm thinking about $450. The house has a dining room, fireplace, dishwasher, washer and dryer, and many other fantabulous amenities. Email me for pictures or more information.

Hello Fellow Owls!

Hi all!

My name is Zina and I just graduated from UCLA (my graduation was this past Saturday, so I really envy all of you who have been enjoying your summers already!). I'm excited to meet everyone this August and to get to know you all.

I'm originally from Southern California, although I did live in St. Louis for a few years when I was little, so I'm really excited but also a bit nervous about moving to the East Coast. I can't wait to explore Philly and the surrounding areas, and maybe even take a road trip or two, but I doubt that I'll have much time to do that :^)

I'm also looking for one or two roommates. I think that I'd like to live in the Manayunk area, but I'd be up to exploring other options as well. I'm clean, drama-free and easy-going. I'll be committed to studying but I definitely want to have fun and enjoy myself while in school. If anyone still needs a roommie, please email me at zzhangin@ucla.edu.

I look forward to seeing everyone in August!

PC Requirement

I asked Tom Fanrak, the Manager of the Technology Support Center for the Health Science Center Campus, to address the “Macs Not Recommended” concern expressed on the Blog. The Technology Recommendations are posted to TempleMedOnline. His response is below:

The following paragraph in the "TechRec2007" document addresses the "no Macs" issue:

"The School of Medicine does not recommend purchasing a Macintosh laptop. Older Macintosh computers without an Intel processor are not compatible with the USMLE shelf exams. Students who own Intel-based Macs running Microsoft Windows XP are strongly cautioned that their Mac computer may not be compatible with the curriculum's online exams, lab and workshop programs, or certain course materials."

To elaborate:

The Med School's leadership has standardized on using software that is developed specifically for Windows PC computers.

This allows the Med School to adopt software based on its ability to meet the functional needs of the curriculum, and not on its ability to run on more than one platform. By requiring PC computers, the school is not limited to purchasing software that is developed and tested on both PCs and Macintoshes.

The school requires students to take online exams on their laptop. The NBME online Shelf exams do not run on the Mac OS platform. Additionally, Windows XP is required because the Shelf exams do not currently run on Vista.

The Med School has also chosen to require PCs to simplify the development and support of specialized computer programs created by faculty at the Med School.

Certain workshops will require a student to connect their PC to laboratory equipment that is only compatible with a PC.

Apple's Intel-based Macintoshes are a relatively recent development. The fact that they can run Windows operating system does not guarantee that they are able to run all Windows-based software that the students will be required to run.

By not complying with the school's requirement that students own a PC laptop, the student assumes all liability for their inability to complete their coursework, run required software, view course content, perform lab exercises, and take online exams.

I hope this information is helpful.

Hi Everyone! I am getting really excited about coming to Temple and am looking forward to meeting you all! My name is Valerie and I just graduated from Drexel as a Bio major. I actually finished up with classes back in March and I have been working as a Pharmacy tech in Baltimore since then. I am originally from just south of Baltimore, but since I went to undergrad in Philly, I am somewhat familiar with the city. Like many of you, I try to balance my studies with my social life.
Also like many of you, I am in search of housing and/or roommate(s). I am just beginning my housing search and would like to share an apartment/house with one or more females. I don't have much of a preference on where in the city I want to live.. as long as it is safe and affordable. I consider myself to be pretty laid back and easy to live with... i just like to keep things relatively clean, but that really isn't a problem because I clean when I am stressed! I am only about 2 hours away from Philly right now, so I would be happy to join someone in their search. Also, does anyone already have housing locked down and is just in need of a roommate? You can contact me at vnd22@drexel.edu or call me at 443-928-9457.

Still Looking for Housing

Hi everyone, my name is Nikko and I am from Napa CA. I am still looking for a roommate and up until now I have been focusing on housing for my internship this summer in San Francisco. So I am still looking for a place- I have a car, so I would like somewhere that is easy to commute to and from (also preferably close to a gym). If anyone is still looking for a roommate, the best way to reach me is narger@middlebury.edu. I was also wondering, where are the computer and health reqs? Are they on the portal site? Thanks and I can't wait until August.

Hey Everyone!!!

Hey all,

I don't want to be the only one who doesn't contribute to the blog so I figure it's about that time. I'm from New Jersey and I graduated from The College of New Jersey in 2006. I played basketball for the school and club volleyball. I've been working for a contract research company for the past year and I'm pumped to be moving to Philly. I just picked up an apartment in Rittenhouse Square, so anyone who will be close by let me know. Can't wait for August it's going to be awesome!

w'sup!

I dont really have anything important but I just like to say I am jealous of all of you already enjoying their summer (which I presume is everyone) while im studying for my last final!

But with that said, I think all of the california ppl should hang out before we make our move to phili..wut do you guys think??

Jay

Hello!

Hey guys. this is super late to be on the blog!
My name is Jackie Kim and I graduated from UCLA in 2006.
I"m currently living in Westwood and working at an elementary school.

Since I'm not from PHilly, or the East Coast, I have no idea where to even get started in terms of looking for housing. Should I make a trip out there to Philly to go look? It seems as if most everyone has their housing situation all figured out already. eek.

From what I've heard, I think I would really like to live in Center City and would love to find a roomate!
Any sort of help would be much appreciated.
I'm so excited to meet you all!

Center City Roommate?

Hi Friends!
I am looking for someone to live with me in the Center City/Art Museum area (preferably close to public trans). I haven't found a place yet, so if you already have one and need a roommate that would be great! I'll be searching online in the next few days for places though. I live 2 hours from Philly near Baltimore and have a pretty free summer so I can go up and check things out at any time. I'm a 22/male, clean, non smoker, and very easy to get along with. If you want to know more about me read my post "HOLA" from back in May or just email me

thanks, see you soon!

Yay Class of 2011!

Hello Class of 2011! I just wanted to introduce myself as your Orientation Coordinator. I’m a 2nd year at Temple Med and I will be working on your orientation for the summer. I am here to answer any questions and to check on the blog periodically. My e-mail address is mfiero@temple.edu. That is probably the easiest way to contact me and I can usually respond quickly.

So enjoy your summer and I look forward to meeting you in August!

Any thoughts to share?

Hey everyone!

This is Christine from Erie, PA- the other side of the state. I'm 24, a graduate of Ithaca College, and thrilled to be spending my next few years in Philly. I've been accepted to Drexel for a long time, I was initially wait-listed at Temple, and now accepted there too. I'm in a bind. For months I just assumed I'd be a Drexel med student. It's been really tough for me to make a sound decision on where to go. Really tough! Obviously I'm not asking for all of you fine people I have yet to meet to tell me where to go...I'm just hoping maybe some of you wouldn't mind sharing your reasons for your excitement and/or anxiety about going to Temple. Thanks for any help! Maybe I'll see you all this summer- I'm trying to move in July and would be all about meeting up for coffee or a drink sometime before orientation.

Hey East Coasters!

Hey guys, is our class really meeting each other for the first time online? I'm officially going to facebook stalk everyone here... just kidding!... =D hhaha don't be scared. But seriously, I'm excited to friend whore everyone out this August and meet a bunch of cool people.

First things first, I think we all need to find housing. I just went to Philly this past weekend (has anyone had philly cheesesteaks at Jim's it was awesome!) and talked to the admissions office, so I know some of the safe and convenient areas to live. When I visited, I loved the art museum area because it looks like a great place to go outside and enjoy nice weather (Are you guys laughing, I'm from CA, I can dream can't I?). I won't have a car next year, so ideally I want to live somewhere convenient for public transportation. I'm hoping to live with a couple awesome girls who I can have a great time with.

A little about me: I graduated from UC Berkeley in 2006. I am passionate about nutrition and enjoy being active. My email is J_Kim3@berkeley.edu Please contact me if you're still looking for places to live!

Greetings from Boston

Hey All,
I figure it is about time I introduce myself, so here goes: I'm Cari, I'm a 23 year old living in Boston right now. I went to Brandeis University and majored in Biology and Anthropology. I graduated in 2005, and I've been working at Mass General Hospital since then. I grew up in the Lehigh Valley, and am looking forward to moving back to the Keystone state and getting to know Philly and all of you better in August.
I've noticed I am hardly the only current Bostonian posting-would the rest of you Bostonians be interested in meeting up and grabbing a drink sometime before we all migrate down to Philly? I'm a fan of the Kinsale in Government center for its outdoor seating and central location... Shoot me an email at cariellen@gmail.com if you're interested.

Need One More For 6 Bedroom House!

Whatsup everybody,

I posted on here awhile back. Just to reiterate, my name is Gabe and I am a 22 y/o male from Eugene, Oregon coming out to Temple next year. The rest, you can reference my profile and/or my original post on here :)

I was posting because well it looks like 5 of us have been able to snag a 6 br house in the Center City/Art Museum Area and need one more for next year! We are all 22-23 y/o males from all over the country. We seem to all like to balance night life with school and are into sports, music, movies, video games, etc.

The house is a 6 br 2.5 bath four story house with a basement. The rooms are all big and good size. It comes with a wash/dryer and has street parking for cars (I think you need a permit for it) and is located at 1608 Vernon St if anyone is interested in google mapping it. The house is also right near the broad st line so transportation should be easy to and from the medical school. Rent will be roughly $440 a person + utilities which is a steal for the location

We are trying to lock this down and we need to get our applications all filed here shortly so if anyone else is still looking for a place e-mail me at gsmith2@uoregon.edu soon so we can get the ball rolling! We can sign the lease with 5, but there is a $250 lease alteration fee if we add someone so we need to get someone ASAP!

If you want more info, I'm on facebook and part of the School of Medicine c/o 2011 group so you can find me on there if you want. Also on myspace at www.myspace.com/gsmith68.

Hello From Texas

Hello everybody I’m Scott from Texas…Don’t know if there will be many other people from Texas at Temple. I graduated from Texas Tech in 06 and live in Fort Worth right now. My significant other and I went to Philly a couple a weeks ago and we were kind of skeptical about it but we really enjoyed the city. We found a nice apartment in Manayunk called The Glen at Shawmont Station. It doesn’t seem too far from Temple and it is close to her school PCOM also. I’m going to be enjoying my summer until I have to pack up my stuff in an U-Haul and drive it all the way up there. Can’t wait to meet everybody!

Art Museum District Living and Safety Question

Hi everyone. I was looking for apartments yesterday and found one on 21st and Spring Garden. I'm not from Philadelphia so I don't know much about the area except what I read. My question is to those who know about the area and whether or not I should feel safe in a first floor apartment on busy Spring Garden St.

Obviously it is in the city, so there is always the increased risk of crime with that... but I was just hoping to get some input from those of you who know the area... especially if you know anyone or have lived in an apartment near there before.

Thanks for any help and look forward to meeting all of you in August.

Any other midwesterners?

Hi Everyone,

My name is Lacy and I'm 24 from Madison, Wisconsin. I graduated from UW-Madison in 2005 majoring in Bacteriology and have since been doing research at the hospital there. I've lived near Madison my whole life so I'm really looking forward to exploring a new place. My only time in Philly was the 21 hrs I was there to interview, but I liked what I saw. : )I'm pretty laid back and like to keep busy finding new things to do.

I don't have a place to live yet, but I'd like to live with 1 or 2 other med students. I don't think I'll have a car, so I was hoping to find a place a reasonable distance from the school that I could use public transport. I like to go out and be social. I'm not a party animal but I'm not a recluse either, so I'd like to live with similar people. I like photography, music, being outdoors, traveling, good wine, and good conversation (kinda sounds like a dating ad, right).

Anyways, I joined the Temple group on facebook, so friend me if you want. I look forward to meeting you all! Feel free to contact me about living situations too! I might take a trip out near the end of July to apartment hunt.

Hey Everyone!

Since I've been reading this blog, I felt weird not being social and posting. My name is Liz (or Zil) Paterek. I'm 21 and I live in New Jersey about an hour and a half from Philly, so I can visit pretty much whenever. I went to college in the Philly suburbs (Bryn Mawr) so I know a little about the city. I graduated in 06' and spent this year working at Trader Joe's (I know the most medically related job ever, right).

I'm a music dork and absolutely love the scene in Philly. If anyone else is like me we should definately plan to go see some shows. I'm also a (pretty bad) snowboarder and I vaguely remember mention of a snowboarding/skiing club. I'm really hoping I didn't just make that up in my head. However, I will have a car so if anyone else is interested in snowboarding feel free to hit me up for a ride sometime.

I'm really looking forward to meeting all of you guys in August.

Peace,
Liz

PS: If anyone wants to contact me feel free to talk to me on facebook or email me at epaterek@yahoo.com

Late Joiner

Hey guys -

Seems I was a little late in joining the blog! But I guess its better late than never...

I am a 23 year old female, and I graduated from Penn State in '06. For the past year, I've been working for Accenture (IT Consulting company) as a Business Analyst and I've had the opportunity to travel around the country for work. Currently, I'm staffed on a project in Honolulu, Hawaii which has been pretty amazing :).

I'm also looking for a roomate. I visited Temple's Med Campus today to get some information on housing and I plan on going back next Thursday to visit some apartments in the Center City area (and hopefully sign a lease if all goes well.) If anyone is interested in making a trip down there as well, let me know!

Looking forward to meeting you all in August! Feel free to call/email me if you want to meet up or look for apartments.

Greetings from Brooklyn!!

Hey all!!!!!... I have been reading everybody's posts and I have become really excited to meet all of you guys in August. Well the formalities first... My name is Karimah. I am originally from New York City (Brooklyn to be exact.) I graduated from the University of Maryland in 2005. After that, I spent a year doing bioresearch/biodefense work for the government. Since August of last year, I have been living back at home in NYC and now I work as an EMT. I do have an apartment set up for this year(hopefully) in the Mt. Airy section. I would be willing to carpool if anyone else lived in that area. It is near Drexel's Med School, so it is near the Alden Park Apartments and such. By second year, I hope to be a roommate with one or more of you guys. I really am looking forward to meeting, learning, and studying with you guys. See you August 6th!!!! :) FYI, I am on myspace... myspace.com/karimah_rimah....

Intro and Question

Hi everyone,

Just a quick intro if anyone cares. I'm from 25 from Los Angeles, graduated from UCLA in 2005, and been working there for the past two years. I am looking forward to meeting all of you.

A question about the laptop requirement. Does it have to be a laptop?? I got a desktop that meets the requirement, and a laptop that is basically a glorified type writer. I really don't want to spend the money on getting souped up laptop if I can just use my desktop instead.

More Req's

You guys, more fun. We also have to send in a report for child care clearance (on the site) that takes a couple of weeks.

Macs not recommended...?

Is anyone else a bit annoyed that Macs are not recommended?

I think we should storm the school. Or buy a cheap Dell. My vote is for insurgence.

hey guys! anyone know how I can find this "class page"?

Im a 21 year old from st. louis who just graduated from Cornell, and I look forward to meeting all of you. I don't know about everyone else but I haven't been getting any e-mails from Temple about deposits, health form requirements, etc., and I just wanted to make sure you guys were in the same boat and they havent just forgotten about me--lol. Also, there was a post about our class having a web page with computer, etc. requirements. If someone could direct me there I would appreciate it. Thanks, and I cant wait to meet everyone!

Shawmont/Manayunk Area

Hi Everyone,

My name is Anna, and like many of you, am also looking for a roommate for this August.

I found a nice apartment complex (http://theglenapartments.net/shawmont/index.htm) a little past the Manayunk area. It's about a 15 minute drive to school and the rent for a 2br starts a little under $1600. The parking is free (!!), there is a washer/dryer in each unit, and there's a 24 hr cardio room. If anybody is interested-- shoot me an email! anna.lim@temple.edu. (I'm open to both male and female roommates).

A little about me: I graduated from U of MD last May and took a year off to work. I am SO excited about going back to school and meeting all of you! I'm an incredibly laid-back and easy-going person (read: drama free roommate!). I plan on scoping out some of the concert venues in Philly as soon as I can and would love to have others to go to concerts with. Like some of you guys have already mentioned, I am also a video game nerd (it's my inner child).

I hope you guys have a fantastic rest of the summer, and I hope to hear from some of you soon!

Anyone in Europe?

Hey everybody,

My name's Levi DeLozier. I'll just get the required stuff out of the way: I'm 22, I'm from Central PA, I just graduated from the University of Pittsburgh, I don't have an apartment yet, I like sports (college basketball, football, golf), traveling, and long walks on the beach...

Are any of you in Europe right now? I've been traveling with a buddy from high school and we'll be in Rome, Barcelona, San Sebastian and Paris over the next two weeks. If anyone else is in the same boat let me know and maybe we can meet up.

Also, I just want to say that I'm excited to meet all of you and do this thing together. It should be fun.

Cheers,
Levi

apple and oranges

so I thought I'd change the topic from apartment/roommates. I am in the market for a new laptop. I have been a lifelong PC user but i am strongly considering a change to a mac. For those that a mac, is this a wise idea?? And for med school purposes, will a mac suffice? And how is the transition...im quite the technophobe!

looking to live in manayunk/ east falls / roxborough area

what's up everyone. I'm Jon Galli and I'll be a first year medical student this year. I'm currently in the process of looking for an apartment in the Manayunk/ East Falls/ Roxborough area. I'm looking for a roomate so if anyone is interested either shoot me an email at jgalli@syr.edu or send me a message on AIM at jagg64. Right now I'm kind of leaning towards Manayunk, but I'm still open to living in East Falls or Roxborough.

I'm originally from eastern PA about an hour north of philly (near Pottstown). I recently graduated from Syracuse University...in the tundra known as upstate new york. I'm a HUGE Eagles fan and I'm really looking forward to going to a couple of games again this season. Other interests of mine are playing sports, and going to concerts in the city (mostly alternative and classic rock). Also, I'm embarassed to say that I'm a little bit of a video game nerd. I recently went out and got a Nintendo Wii....very awesome.

I'm looking forward to meeting you all in the fall and I hope everyone has a great summer. see ya soon!
